Update on LC1 & 2 and Women Councils and Committees Elections 2018

As you might be aware, on 24th August 2017, the Electoral Commission released a program for the conduct of LC1&2 and Women Councils and Committees Elections.

However, on 13th November 2017, some citizens secured Court orders a day before the conduct for Village Women Councils and Committees Elections stopping the conduct of the said elections as well as LC1Elections.

The Commission complied with the said order and halted further preparations for the elections pending Court decision. In line with the Court order, the Commission issued a statement halting the elections.

On 15th November 2017, Court advised the Commission and the petitioners to explore an out of Court settlement and report back to Court on the 31st January 2018.

Since then, the Commission has been engaged in discussions and deliberations with the petitioners. The parties came to a settlement that was filed in Court.

Today, Court has endorsed the settlement between the Electoral Commission and one of the petitioners as a conclusion to the case. This means that the Commission is now at liberty to resume the process leading up to the conduct of the said elections.

The Commission is going to work out a detailed fresh programme in line with the terms of the settlement which will be communicated in due course.

The Commission would like to thank all the stakeholders, particularly all those who had expressed willingness to contest, the voters and the citizens at large for their patience, and assure them that the long awaited elections will take place.

For God and my Country,

Justice Byabakama Mugenyi Simon
