EC sets dates for LC I Elections

The Electoral Commission has released the programme for resumption of Administrative Units (Village and Parish Level) and Women Councils and Committees (Village to National Level) Elections, 2018.

The programme will commence with an update of the Village Residents’ Register from 22nd to 25th June 2018, at registration centers in each of the 60,801 villages across Uganda.

The registration exercise shall cover the compilation/update of two registers, that is, the Village Council Register, for purposes of electing the Village (LC I) Chairperson and approval of members of the Village Executive Committee, and the Village Women’s Council Register for purposes of electing the Village Women’s Committee.

The Commission has appointed Monday 25th June 2018 as the cut-off date for registration of voters in all villages. This will be followed by a display of the Village Residents’ Register for a period of two days, from 26th to 27th June 2018,to enable residents check for the correctness of their particulars.

The nomination of candidates for Village LC I Chairperson will be conducted on 4th and 5th July, followed by campaigns from 6th to 9th July and polling on Tuesday 10th July 2018.

According to a statement issued by the Chairperson, Electoral Commission, Justice Byabakama Mugenyi Simon, the election of the Village (LC I) Chairperson shall be by the voters lining behind the nominated candidates or their representatives, or their portraits or symbols, in accordance with Section 111(2) of the Local Government Act CAP 243 (as amended).
